A tumultuous Thanksgiving with turkey — and hopefully not Sandhill Crane

Something’s up! I’m not sure exactly what it is, but Piewacket is almost visibly vibrating with excitement. Of course, the constant preening of whiskers, pricking up of ears and tail twitching could also mean my $400 pussy with an attitude is plotting the demise of the world as we know it. I put nothing past her. There are two possibilities for the ’Wacket’s mood, both connected to the upcoming Thanksgiving season. The one thing about the holidays that ’Wacket enjoys is the celebratory dinner and resulting tasty bits of human food she is allowed on this rare occasion. This, I fear, may be one reason for her pent-up emotions: Piewacket is stalking a turkey. The large, but gangly fowl first appeared on Plot Paradise in early summer, on a walk-about from the neighbour’s barn yard. At fi rst I thought it strange that ‘Wacket did not chase it from The Brit’s garden, where she fiercely defends the crops from rabbits and other creatures by hunting them down — and bringing many back to the house as trophies of her watch-cat skills. I was curious, my partner The Brit, furious, as she not only allowed the turkey to roam unhindered around the yard, but actually stretched out in the sunshine and placidly watched it devour his cabbages and onion tops. “Stupid, useless cat,” said The Brit, while Piewacket tried to turn him to stone with her glare. Previously allies in garden defence while I pled for the life of small bunnies and chipmunks, my two housemates were now at logger heads. As Thanksgiving nears, I’ve noticed Piewacket gradually closing in on the big bird. She has yet to discourage its plunder of the garden. In fact, she keeps a constant audio alert for its gobbling arrival, bounding out the door and welcoming it with her “you’re my friend” rolly pollies. This is most bizarre as she never has had, or wanted, friends. Especially not of the inferior barn yard type. But the ’Wacket never does anything without a reason, and always a selfserving one. Under her watchful eye, Turkey has grown quite plump and almost cat-friendly.
